Inspired by traditional sweetshops and childhood confectionery favourites, the new Original Sweet Shop Afternoon Tea at The Chesterfield Mayfair is a sweet tooth’s delight. The hotel has won several awards for its afternoon tea in the past and this new twist offers a playful, imaginative and seriously tasty take on a classic British tradition.
Surrounded by an eye-catching and cheerful array of old-fashioned sweet jars that set the scene, the experience takes place in the hotel’s elegant Conservatory and includes cakes and pastries that draw inspiration from retro confectionery. A treat for all of the family, a playful welcome cup of homemade pink lemonade, floating in dry ice and decorated with flying saucers, marks the start of a fun-filled afternoon.
Nibble on dainty, freshly prepared finger sandwiches with fillings such as Scottish smoked salmon with horseradish cream cheese on beetroot bread and roast chicken with grain mustard mayonnaise and almonds on white bread. This is followed by fresh, homemade fruit and chocolate chip scones which are served with traditional conserves and delectable clotted cream.
Be sure to leave some room for the main event, though. In tribute to old-fashioned British sweet shops, the patisserie offering includes Coca-Cola slices, cherry bonbon cupcakes, chocolate fudge eclairs, Liquorice Allsorts lemon cheesecake and moreish rhubarb and custard macarons among others. These treats are accompanied by your choice of tea, coffee or hot chocolate but the specially selected Liquorice Tea and Fruit Salad Candy Tea compliment the patisserie selection particularly well. For an added special touch, guests can also enjoy a glass of Lanson Champagne alongside the afternoon tea.
Before you go, The Chesterfield’s very own red and white-striped candy man offers guests a final treat in the form of a take away pick and mix. Choose your favourites from a sweet shop cart, and don’t forget to pick up a token for The Chesterfield’s very own vending machine. The token can be used on your next visit to the hotel to be in with a chance of winning a very special prize.
